How to create a Slack APP and use it with RMON

Send alerts to a Slack channel

This example connects the public Slack channel rmon-alerts to checks in your current RMON group. You need permission to install an app in the Slack workspace and to add a destination in RMON.

1. Prepare the Slack app

Open the Slack app dashboard and create an app in the workspace that owns the destination channel.
In the app's OAuth permissions, add the bot permission chat:write.
Install or reinstall the app in that workspace and complete any administrator approval required by your organization.
Copy the Bot User OAuth Token into a secure location for the RMON token field.

2. Give the app access to the channel

Open the intended public channel, such as #rmon-alerts, and add the app to it. Confirm that the app and channel belong to the same workspace.

3. Save the destination in RMON

Select the owning RMON group and open Channels.
In the Slack section, click + Add.
Enter the Bot User OAuth Token in Token.
In Channel name, enter rmon-alerts. For the current RMON channel form, use the public channel's name without #, a Slack URL or an ID such as C0123456789.
Choose the group when that selector is available and save.
Click Test and confirm that the message appears in the intended Slack channel.

Use the channel name consistently in this workflow so both channel testing and check alerts address the same destination. A renamed Slack channel needs its saved RMON name updated and retested.

4. Assign it to a check

Edit a check, open Notifications and select the saved Slack destination. Save the check. Complete the failure-and-recovery exercise on a disposable check before using this destination for production alerts.

If the test fails

Error or symptom	Action
Invalid or revoked token	Copy the active bot token from the correct app/workspace, update Token and test again.
Missing scope	Add `chat:write` and reinstall the app so the updated permission takes effect.
Channel not found / not in channel	Check the saved channel name and add the app to that channel in the correct workspace.
Test arrives but monitoring alerts do not	Verify the check's selected Slack destination and recorded incident, then inspect notification logs.

After replacing a token, test the destination and a disposable check again. Store tokens only in their credential fields; names and descriptions should identify the destination without containing its secret.
